Not only did Missy Elliot prove that the ladies could rap too, she pushed the boundaries of hip-hop into the surreal with her (and/or Timbaland’s) off-balance beats and avant-garde music videos. Missy asserts a strong, sexual, female point of view in hip hop culture and has proved the staying power of dirty feminist grooves.

The Rain: triumphant debut.

Get Ur Freak On: nasty dance track, truly horrifying vid.
